Please teach me which is correct ?

1) I did not reply the letter to Mary promptly ..............

2) I did not promptly reply the letter to Mary ..............

You can put adverbs like 'promptly' in various positions, so both positions are OK. However, after the main verb 'reply' is very common. ie

I did not reply promptly to Mary's letter ..............

Please note that you reply to someone else's letter.
