Preposition 'in' vs 'on'

While it is normal to use the preposition 'in' for this phrase, "...in the field", what do we use for the word 'court'? Is it "We play in the badminton court" or "We play on the badminton court"?

Generally speaking, say 'on' if you are thinking of the court as a flat surface, and 'in' if you are thinking of it as a building or confined area. 'On' is much more commonly heard.

If you are talking about the badminton shuttlecock (bird), we say you lose the point if it is 'out' (ie outside the line), and continue to play if it is 'in'.
