Predate,antedate?

Hi! everyone.Could you tell me what do these words mean?
And I also want to know,what type of check is predated check?
Does predate and antedate mean "precede"?

Antedate is not correct here. When you write a check to pay someone, you put a date on it that is the date that the check is valid. In some places, a dated check can only be cashed for a limited time, a year for instance.
