1) Fond lovers, cruel as their flame,
Cut in these trees their mistress' name.
Little, alas, they know or heed,
How far these beauties hers exceed!
I wonder if I can change the above into the one below. Would anyone check this out please?
Poems are really hard to understand because of their weird structure.
2) Cruel as their affection, lovers like to
Inscribe their lover's name in these trees.
Sadly, lovers do not know or pay attention to
How far the beauties of these trees will go!

All except the last line is a pretty good paraphrasing. The last line should read something like this: How much more beautiful the trees are than the lovers
