Pleeease help me understand and correct this sentence!

OK, so I honestly don't understand what the author of this paragraph means in the underlined sentence below. Besides, as he is not an English native speaker, I do think there are some mistakes in it. Could you please help me?

"The fuzzy life curve models the fetus growing from 0% alive just after conception to 100% alive at birth. Each month the fetus is both alive and non-alive to some degree. Non-life shades smoothly turn into life and in death it shades back. "

Heelp! How can we change the underlined sentence into one that makes sense??

Thank you!
