Please help me! I have no idea:)

I hope my question is clear and you can help!

In Hungarian (my native language) it's often used that: A long journey waited for us. I fear, it's bad in English. Which verbs can i use before journey or trip, if the journey is before us?

so i know that 'we took a journey' but in this case we have already done the journey.

Of course i can say, that for e.g. "We will have to take a long journey" but i guess there's a lot of other way of expressing this to avoid repeating 'take'. So if you know (I'm sure you know) usefull phrases about journey, trip, etc. please share with me!!
