I am using Smartphones for quite awhile now, almost 11 years, I think, no I am sure! My first smart phone was HP iPAQ hw6510, and that was one of the world’s first devices which had a GPS, a phone, and tablet functionality in one device. After owing several iterations of Smartphones, more than 15 in last 11 years, I still think Smartphones are a failure, if not a complete failure then at least a partial failure in incorporating new technologies and improving already present technologies. For me, if someone with a potential cannot do his/her best that is a failure. I don’t deny their success or importance, but as a device they could do much better than what did. Let’s go back to 2010 and imagine we have the original Samsung Galaxy S, is there anything which Galaxy S could not do and Galaxy S6 can do?
Among many others, following are the reasons which compel me to the conclusion that Smartphone makers have failed to produce awesome devices and these money making giants- Apple, Samsung, LG-need to do a lot better before they could claim that they have produced a perfect, or a near perfect, phone.

Smartphones: Why are they still a failure to me?

After owing several smartphones - more than 15 in last 11 years, I still think smartphones are quite dumb and a failure; if not a complete failure, then at least a partial failure when it comes to incorporating new technologies and improving older ones. I don’t deny their success or importance, but as a device, smartphones should be able to do much more. Let’s go back to 2010 and imagine we had the original Samsung Galaxy S. Is there anything which Galaxy S could not do that the Galaxy S6 can donow? I know about fingerprint sensor, pedometers and heart rate sensor but these are just incremental developments to me.
Among many others, these are the main reasons which compel me to conclude that Smartphone makers have failed to produce awesome devices and that smartphone giants- Apple, Samsung, and LG- need to do a lot better before they could really entice people like me. Yes we buy phones but not because they are awesome, just because we need them.
1: Screen-to-Body Ratio
A Smartphone is a thing that you carry with you, all the time. Something which is with you 24/7 that should be beautiful, right? May be it is very technical for a common reader but trust me the real beauty of a Smartphone is dependent on its screen-to-body ratio, remember LG G2!!!! The best looking phones are the ones who have a higher body-to-screen ratio. Normally modern phones hang somewhere around 65 to 75 percent screen-to-body ratio. After so many years companies are still struggling to keep bezels narrow. Come on, stop selling these ugly devices with huge bezels, and give consumers a phone with over 90 percent screen-to-body ratio and let us praise your aesthetic sense, for a change.
2: Battery Capacity
I remember my first mobile phone which did not have CLI but a battery life that was good enough for at least a couple of days. These days I not only carry a power bank with me but also a car charger and a spare charger at office. I know Smartphones have over 3000mah batteries these days but even those batteries don’t last more than a day, sometimes not even a full day. I know a bit about battery chemistry, I know development in the only feasible battery chemistry (Lithium-ion) is slow but there should be some other way to give consumers a battery that could last three days of medium to heavy usage.
3: Charging Time
Wireless charging is here, QualComm’s Quick charge 2.0 is here, and now Quick charge 3.0 is also coming but all these technologies are still scarce. Battery capacity and charging time are correlated and Smartphone manufactures have failed in this department also. I know Ipad is not a Smartphone, rather I don’t even consider it as a smart device but have you ever tried charging it? Do you remember how much time it takes? Dear CEOs give us a phone that should be able to fully charge in less than 30 minutes. Can you? (I know about the article appeared on ProPakistani about Huawei’s new battery but it has still not appeared in any smartphone, has it?)
4: Low light photos and Slow Motion Videos
New smartphones are coming up with 23 megapixels cameras, 4K video capabilities which I think is just a rat race among makers and boring for many people because neither we watch 4K videos nor we intend to print a 23 MP photo, or do we? I think the whole mega pixels war between brands is quite ugly now. Companies are still not able to stuff phones with amazingly low light capable cameras and specially super slow motion cameras. It would be super fun to do all that stuff with your phone which MythBusters do with their slow motion cams, don’t you think so?
5: Performance decrease over the time
I had all the six iteration of Samsung Galaxy S series and each one of them was really snappy for thee exactly first hour, that’s it! The moment I restored my backup of previous model to the newer one ‘sanppyness’ converted into slowness and by the next few months phone were more of a CNG Suzuki Mehran than Bugati Veyron which it was designed to be. Why do all these phones get slower with every passing month? Unlike most of the computers there is no HDD in smartphones to blame, then why does it slow down? I know their designed life is not more than 2 years but at least for those 2 years phones should work as fast as they were when bought at Apple store or Samsung Experience Center.
6: Back facing loudspeakers
Why do manufactures put loudspeaker on the back? What is wrong with them? Have you ever seen a car that has speakers in the rear bumper facing outside? I am sure not, then why do these silly phone manufactures put loud speaker on the back panel? Every phone should have stereo loud speakers placed on the front, Period!
7: Boring Slate/Candybar Design
Apple, Samsung, LG, Motorola, and all other phone makers are essentially manufacturing one form factor based Smartphones and that is Candybar type phones. I am bored to death, please forgive your consumers and give them a bit of choice. I was a huge fan of folding phones but I cannot find that design anymore (I know Galaxy folder is here). Why everyone is coming up with almost same designs? Please come out of this boring slate design and offer something new, not the material (aluminum 6000, aluminum alloy 7000, magnesium alloy, steel alloy, carbon fiber, etc) but the design.
8: Dumbness
Why do I need to unlock my phone every time I take it out of my pocket? It seems like they-mobile phone manufacturers- are inspired from personal vehicles where drivers lock and unlock every time they go in and out of their dumb cars. I know fingerprint sensors are here but even they require a particular task and that is to put your finger on that dumb sensor, which is even dumber. If you really want to be smart then take a cue from Tesla key Fob, or else put fingerprint sensor on the rim of smartphone (sides) so when an owner holds his phone it is already unlocked.

I agree Smartphone is important to every one of us, including me, but as a piece of technology they are not as smart as they are advertised.
