00battle for global dominance, the development of a nuclear arsenal became 02br
00a priority for Joseph Stalin's regime - and Semipalatinsk was chosen 02br
00as the test centre.02br

00The Semipalatinsk Test Site is located on the steppe in northeast Kazakhstan 02br
00(then the Kazakh SSR), south of the valley of the Irtysh River.02br

00The Antiaircraft Missile Complexe, I served from 1981 to 1983, was the basic 02br
00missile defense system for Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site area with headquarter 02br
00in military town Chagan and a number of missile sites in border areas of SNTS.02br

00I was told nothing about the dangers I faced when I joined up to do my military 02br
00service in Kazakhstan. In 1992, the Kazakhstan government recognised that 02br
001.6 million people were affected by radiation. In a report by the International 02br
00Atomic Energy Agency, the government identified 67,000 people living in the 02br
0019 villages closest to the site as having been seriously affected. 02br
