Can somebody please help to proof-read and give some suggestions on the cover letter below for a PhD application?
It's not a good one but I can hardly come out a better one than this. I desperately need some advices for improvements in this letter. I will appreciate any critiques on it (don't mind a harsh one).
I'll be attaching an academic CV with this letter for the application so I did not mention much about those specific skills why this PhD position suits me. Will this be alright? The letter is a short one because I need to keep it for one-page long, is it ok as well?
I am writing in response to the announcement on your webpage as regard to the PhD studentship for the project under Professor Groban’s skilled supervision. I respectfully submit this letter of application, for I believe my academic background and experiences are well qualified to meet the needs of the project.
I am currently working towards a MSc. in Neurobiology in Department of Medical Sciences at the University of Whatever. During my course work, the modules have covered a wide range of topics in genetics and translational research in neuroscience. My current research project, under the supervision of Dr. Franz Liszt and Professor Sergei Rachmaninoff, has focused on the regulation of the formation of protein aggregations in Kennedy’s disease. The research that will elaborate from it will explore a strategy for gene therapy in treating this neurodegenerative disease by means of delivering a viral vector expressing the particular protein to motor neurons. Though the project has not achieved any conclusive results yet at this stage, such an experience has allowed me to become even more absorbed in the neuroscience world and has greatly upgraded my lab experiment capacity.
As my curriculum vitae illustrate, I have had excellent opportunities to be exposed to research and laboratory-based environments throughout my academic years and my career as a laboratory technician. Through these experiences, not only had I equipped myself with research methods as well as problem-solving and analyzing skills, I have also had a chance to expand a network with experts in relevant fields. I have also gained the understanding of the ethics and conduct rules in different laboratories in addition to the invaluable skills to manage, lead and collaborate effectively with people. These increasing experiences have built my confidence in working independently as a research personnel.
I look forward to once again becoming part of a scientific community; a pursuit of career in research and experience of excitement and satisfaction of being interest in neuroscience field. With the educational values and experiences that I possess, I believe that I have the capability, and potential to take this PhD position. I am confident that I will be an active, open-minded and useful member and researcher, willing to contribute during my PhD.
