When I was a child, I wondered how a ship as a huge size of steel can float in the water, meanwhile small needle sinks instead. This curiosity intrigued me to take a naval architecture major for my bachelor study, which is a major that study about the designing of ships. It was also encouraged by the awareness that as the largest archipelago, the ship takes an important role for Indonesia to transport people or cargos inter-island. Gratefully I got a scholarship from the Indonesian Government to study at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) which is one of the best universities in Indonesia with a naval architecture major. I achieved my bachelor’s degree four years later in 2016. Then right after I had graduated, I was offered a scholarship from ITS for the master program that I was able to finish in three semesters. I have been studying naval architecture for almost eight years and now is working as an associate lecturer at the Department of Naval Architecture of ITS, Indonesia. Nevertheless, I realize there are a lot of things that I still need to learn. Then, it triggers my enthusiasm to pursue doctoral study abroad with regard to gain either in-depth knowledge or experience.

As the world’s largest shipbuilding industry, South Korea comes first into mind as the right place for my further study. There is no doubt that South Korea has advanced technology in many aspects including ship technology. Recently South Korea has even merged the two largest shipyards that will have an immediate impact on research and speed up the development of new ship designs. It is really captivated me to take my doctoral study in South Korea.

Recently, I have an interest in energy efficiency and being narrowed in a topic that I Intend to propose for my doctoral study. I have a plan to conduct research with the scope of the optimization of the ducted propeller with stators and create its design standard. By optimizing the propulsion system, it will be able to reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions sequentially. Then, I keenly desire to accomplish my doctoral program at the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering (NAOE), Pusan National University (PNU) with a concentration in ship design or propulsion in accordance with my topic. Therefore, the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) program will be the bridge for my doctoral study at PNU, South Korea.

During I was studying at ITS, I got an opportunity to do an internship at a shipyard and classification society. Those internships provided me unforgettable experiences, such as carried out surveys either on new building ships or existing ships, and ISM Code audit on a foreign ship, TW Beijing which is a China flagged ship. Since then, I have realized there are slight differences between theoretical and practical knowledge. Besides that, I also joined the Ship Design Laboratory as a research assistant. This position offered me great experiences, like how to conduct a feasibility study or thorough analysis, learn new software related to CFD, as well as write a journal that made me able to publish one international journal and two proceeding journals. Those experiences give great leverage for me when I performed my master’s thesis, as well as for my current career as an associate lecturer at ITS that is required to work related to education, research, and community contribution.

Since 2018, my department in ITS has signed an agreement of a double degree program with Mokpo National University (MNU), South Korea. The faculty members representative of MNU will visit ITS annually for a summer course to give a lecture to ITS’s students. For last year's visitation, I became one of the people in charge who were responsible to organize the event. I really impressed by their teaching technique. Then, we opened a discussion and sharing session either about ship knowledge or the education system in both countries. Unquestionably, South Korea has an ideal education system.

Honestly, I have known about South Korea since I was ten through a colossal drama, Dae Jang Geum. I have been mesmerized with South Korea's history and culture since then. I am dreaming to come over sooner or later because everything about South Korea has made me amazed. I am eager to learn the culture, as well as the language to better understand. Studying in South Korea provokes me not only because of the great opportunities, but also the priceless life experiences it has to offer. I believe that study in South Korea will give great value to both my career and my life ahead. Through support from the GKS program, I am hoping to be able to implement the knowledge and ideal education system to be a better lecturer.

One of my first memory of knowing about South Korea was when I was researching on topic 'Education System of India' for writing my bachelor's project I came across the fact that South Korea’s education system is one of the strongest in the world which attracted me to know more about the country South Korea. Koreans realizes the importance of education very back in times that is the reason for their successful education system. I get to know more about South Korea through Korean Drama. Being a media student when you watch series and movies the first thing you notice before dwelling into the story is how this show has been shot, techniques of the cinematography, ambiance, etc. All Dramas got me so excited to know more about the country and as Napoleon Hill said, “The starting point of all achievement is desire” and my desire to know the country begins. South Korea has become a world phenomenon in the field of Media and Entertainment as their dramas and pop culture is dominating the whole world and that is the reason I want to pursue my master's in Media and Communication from the Republic of Korea. South Korea is continuously ranking the world’s best in terms of the education system and what is better than learning skills from the country that is world domination in my major not only that, Korea is tech heaven, and universities out there are producing the best and the finest persons in every field. It became the goal that someday I will study in South Korea but belonging to a middle-class family it was hard to achieve such a goal and it became an unrealistic dream. But as Author Paulo Coelho said in his book ‘The Alchemist’ “Every journey begins with beginner's luck” and this was my beginner’s luck that I got to know about GKS scholarship which helps international students to come over and learn the education from world’s best education system. The dream started looking realistic when I got to know about this program.
I am a Media student and completed my under graduation in April 2021 in Subject Media Studies from Central University of Allahabad, India. I achieved First Division with Distinction in my under graduation and ranked first in every semester exams in my batch 2018-21 (belongs to the Top 20% percentile of the class and attached the certificate to verify my statement). In my school years also, I always took part in both the educational and the extracurricular activities as these activities teach skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management and also improves confidence and that is the reason I was selected as the Head Girl of the school. One of the aims in my life is to become a polyglot and the GKS program is helping me to learn a new language that is the Korean language. The Hallyu wave is increasing and South Korea is sweeping the world with its cultural influence so it is beneficial in many ways to learn the Korean language as it is becoming a global language.
I never struggled with my lessons of subjects related to my major media and communication because learning becomes easy when you find your soul subject. Ever since I began studying media I have developed a tenacious passion for the subject and to know how media entertain and educate the public and promote the public good.
When I was little, I always watched that my late grandfather who worked as an editor in the newspaper Times of India was considered an upright and reliable person for any advice because of his profession and he introduced me to the world of Media and Communication. As I move through education I started to realize that career in a field where I can dedicate my skills, knowledge, and myself to catalyst the development of society is what I want to do in my life. A good media person can give voice to the voiceless and has the capability of bringing information to thousands of people living in the Country.
In my years of Under Graduation, I partook in hands-on projects, made video essays, created newspapers, compiled magazine ads, did social media handling, attended film festivals, and also put together a personal website. In a pandemic, I did a survey on the topic ‘Social Media in Pandemic’ to discover answers of how the news on social media is working for the public as everyone was shut in their houses and exposure of social media increased and it is always good to know the people’s opinion about what they think about media and their working. During the lockdown, my batchmate and I made a documentary on ‘Media Trail’ because of cases that occurred in India during covid-19. I wrote many blogs on the current world issues on topics like Portugal offered migrants citizenship rights, financial markets US oil trading news, etc. which got published with my name on the online website Indian Memoir. I also made documentaries and interviewed people to learn the ground working of media. The most memorable interview I took was of Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, the first transgender to represent Asia-Pacific at a United Nations task meeting as it was my first time to interview an internationally famous personality and I struggled to get her time for an interview and waited for 3 days in her vicinity to interview her and impressed by the hard work she gave her time and a gold coin to me as a memento.
Majoring in the media and communication from South Korea will strengthen my knowledge and skills and help me to excel in the media field. In my three years of under graduation to gain experience I did internships with companies like The CollegeTips.in which is a startup in the Education industry and skill development where I developed my content writing skills, volunteered in Hues of Bliss National Art Exhibition, participated in One plus One Event held on the Independence day of India and appointed as Intern in the Content Studio Fiction Department of Star India which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company in India. In the internship with Star India, I got the chance to work on an Indian Drama named Tera Mera Saath Rahe on channel Star Bharat which taught me a lot about how the team works, making of the daily soap, how channels work, what guidelines channel needs to follow, how post-production of the episode happens, the importance of creative feedback and how production houses work in coordination with the channel and all of these inclined my interest towards electronic media. With the experience of working in Indian Drama’s creative team, I prepared my final year thesis on topic DRAMA IN TELEVISION “displaying the world in a box: unfolding the curtains of drama.” which impressed my professor. I won certificates from Reuters which is the largest news agency in the world for completing the training in Digital Journalism and got certified by Google Digital Garage for Digital Marketing Training. I was also an active member of Creative Media Club of the Central University. I got selected in the Gandhi Fellowship Program which aims to create young leaders across the country to drive positive transformation at all levels by reforming the system of public education. I tried to enhance my skills and experience as much as I can to become worthy of GKS program. I prepared the base so that I can learn greater skills and knowledge while doing masters in South Korea. The universities I selected for my major are known for their media and communication departments as they are helping students to lead the world in media field and creating many skilled individuals who will give back to the community and society by working for it. Some other reasons are that I wanted to study with the best universities in the world which have good rankings, and who have many top-class professors to teach Media and Communication major, universities who have wide spectrum of topics related to media and communication ranging from the production of media content to distribution and consumption.
I got Uttar Pradesh Government Scholarship during my bachelor's from the Central University of Allahabad which helped me to complete my under graduation degree and supported my parents financially. GKS program is also supporting students from different parts of the world to study and achieve their life goals. It is supporting foreign students to get the best education in South Korea by giving them this great and most prestigious scholarship that offers opportunities to students to learn the best skills and lead the world. When a scholarship is awarded, it comes with responsibility and duty to prove yourself worthy of the financial aid. If given the opportunity I will dedicate myself to GKS program and prove myself worthy of this scholarship. I will use the scholarship to continue focusing on my studies in Media and Communication major.
Media is the watchdog for public interest in many ways. What most intrigues me about Media is that not only media educate and entertain but also helps in finding the voice of the society and offer supports to the society. I also want to contribute to the society of both India and South Korea. Nowadays when we think or talk about great cities the first things that we can relate that thought to is noise, pollution, overpopulation, and all the emission of contaminating gas that every day are endangering the life of its residents, having long term consequences such as mental (stress of big cities, anxiety, depression) and physical illness (Pneumonia, ischemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer ) for the population residing there. Having this in mind the cities of the future should be designed with the main objective of improving the day by day of their residents, without forgetting the process of transforming into more green and sustainable cities. To achieve this it is completely necessary to create conscience in society on the correct use of each natural resource that is in danger of running out if we don´t take care of it. This initiative is not something new or strange to us, because other countries and cities are already developing incredible urban/ sustainable designs; a perfect example for this could be Singapore, a city that completely transformed itself. By the end of the 60´s this fishing commercial city was cataloged by the UN as an “irreparable environmental disaster”.. Instead of letting itself fall into a worse state, in the 70´s, new generations and Singapore's government decided it was time for them to think seriously with a new perspective in mind, that's why they started a program to clean the city and its rivers, relocated factories and public commercial sites. They worked hard for over a decade to create what we now know as the ideal green sustainable city of Singapore. I think this is a great example for everyone. Change is possible if you are willing to be the factor of change.

Even though it seems like a really difficult change, I believe architects to be one of the change factors, and landscape architecture has a huge influence in this transformation and I want to be part of that change for my country and others. But I know I need the right instruction and guidance, and throughout the years as i have grown either as an architect and person i have done a lot of research on Asian cities that represent that ideal i want to pursue; South Korea is a country that has developed strongly in the last few years has attracted my attention; i had the opportunity to go to a conference in Mexico city where the mayor of Seoul, Park Won-soon explained how more humane, inclusive and sustainable cities, can create a change in its population and the city itself; increasing the budget to public transportation, creating an initiative on urban sustainable development by recovering important green areas and rivers, protecting historic buildings, etc. But all this work has surely paid off because now Seoul is recognized for its security, clean city and with great green developed areas.

Previously to this experience I had an approach to Asian cultures when i was younger, my aunt was living in Japan and she used to tell me all about how different from México Asian culture can be, but all for a good reason, after years in school they implemented a new class focused on Chinese culture and language, and I really loved it, for some reason or another I was always attracted to Asian cultures, i find them fascinating; my Chinese teachers natives of Taiwan showed me a music group called “Girls Generation” and I was really intrigued by this group so i decided to do some research and found out they were a K-pop group, that was my first approach to Korean culture. After years when i got admitted to architecture school, I had always had my mind in one goal and that was to do a Masters degree abroad preferably on an Asian country, I want to experience first hand its culture and its society; after the first year in college i had a subject called “ Landscape architecture” and i was really fascinated on how green spaces have a great impact not only on the aesthetics of buildings or cities, but also on the population, because this derivation or the architecture impacts on communities, it helps them grow stronger and interact with each other, green spaces regulate temperature and humidity, they produce oxygen and absorb polluted air, they help improve population well-being, they help reduce noise pollution, etc. I believe every architect should be turning its attention to improve and design more green spaces.

In this search of keeping myself informed on different trends and styles within the landscape architecture area I read different books that recollected the great landscape designs throughout human evolution and got to the conclusion that my favorite styles were: Asian gardens, Italian renaissance gardens, and French baroque gardens. While doing research on this subjects I found myself with a course focused on Sustainable Urban Design imparted by the architecture firm “Ugreen” this series of conferences taught me a lot about the variety of approaches regarding the vegetation of choice when designing, the factors to have in mind to achieve an effective and aesthetic garden, that goes according to its location and its skyline context.

Getting to the decision of doing a Master's degree in this subject was not hard, the hard part came to deciding where I wanted to study. At first I had no idea of the variety of scholarships that Asian governments and universities offer for foreigners, it was until a friend of mine, told me about the excellence of Korean universities and presented me with the announcement of the GKS scholarship, doing my research i came with a lot of great reviews and opinions about this opportunity, but i honestly never saw anything related to architecture, that's why i came to the decision that i would be that chance and i would help the South Korean-Mexican architecture relationship grow strong. Even though our cultures are really different, I think together we can achieve great things. Mexico is a great country. It just needs the guidance and support of more advanced and more developed countries that want to see for a better future such as South Korea.

After discovering this scholarship I have dedicated the last 3 years of my life to studying about Korean language and culture; I signed myself up for different language courses, and tried to immerse myself into the culture as much as I could. I want to be as prepared as I can be for this opportunity. Opportunities like this don't present themselves everyday to anyone. That's why I'm doing everything in my hands to be an adequate candidate, not thinking only of the present nor the next 3 years but the actual impact and life that I want for myself in this country.

I decided South Korea was the country I wanted to create a life in, this is the country that can help me be that person that makes a change not only in Mexican society and architecture, but i hope to stay in South Korea and actually be part of making it even greater than it already is.

I want to be able to call South Korea my second home, not only the unique country that help me be a great landscape architect, but a better person.
