00It is known to me that a past perfect continuous emphasize duration and not whether it is finished or not.02br

00He had been waiting for Nancy for three hours before she arrived yesterday. -- See, Had the part underlined been a past perfect the past perfect there would have been optional since the word 'before' shows the time frame involved clearly; but why that doesn't do the job for this?02br

00Were it a past perfect this would be good I think: He had waited (or waited) for Nancy for three hours before she arrived yesterday.02br

00Jane put some lotion on her face because she had been lying in the sun. -- Are you able to read the fact that Jane put the lotion on her after 01u00she finished sunbathing02u00 from this? Did she finish sunbathing before she put on the lotion?0-
