Past or present perfect

Hi,

Which tense would a professor starting his lecture use?
'In our last session I explained/have explained... '

If both can be used, what would the difference be?

Lots of thanks to all contributors.

Simple past. I explained.

That's because he gives a definite time (In our last session). The present perfect is not used when a definite time is indicated.
