Why can't we say "She was looking nice yesterday" instead of "She looked nice yesterday" or "I was thinking that I would go there" instead of " I thought that I would go there" ?

But the country I live in, we do say those things. "She was looking nice yesterday", however, may imply that she doesn't normally look nice.
