Passive voice of envy
I have two questions to ask. When making a passive voice sentence using the verb envy, you can ONLY use "indirect object" as subject. (That is what I learned) (1) But what if there is no indirect object but only direct object like you can see that in the following sentence "Many envy him===He is envied by many? (2) They envied Tim for his faithfulness. In passive voice, His faithfulness was envied by them. But can I also say "Tim was envied FOR his faithfulness by them? (O or X) Thanks.

deborahjeong Many envy him===He is envied by many? Yes. Obviously the "rule" about using only the indirect object is wrong.
