We have to compare 'the other' and 'another', because they both usually refer to 'one other' of something. So if you talked about one example and there is only one more example, you will talk about the other example. But If there are two or more other examples you could talk about and you choose one, it will be another example.
In situations like this, "the other one" means 'the last one'.

'another' and 'the other' can also refer to groups and to a specified number of people or things.
