From the dialogues of a Britsh movie, 1961:
Old lady #1: Terrible, isn't it? He killed her and got cleared away.
Old lady #2: Well, it only goes to show that none of us is safe these days. Could all be killed and nobody's a wiser.
Old lady #1: People don't get killed unless they ask for it.
Does the expression 'nobody's a wiser' mean "without even taking notice of it"? or rather it is something like "nobody will be charged or punished for it"
I think that it has to do with the alleged murderer mentioned by Old lady #1, who got cleared in spite of being guilty.
