Need help with the meaning of a poem
This stanza is from a poem by Anthony Hecht, titled, "More Light! More Light!". Three men are taken to outside a German wood and commanded to dig a hole. Two of them are going to be buried alive by the third one who then will be shot dead by the soldiers. I'd appreciate it if you could help me with the meaning of the two parts in bold. I cannot get the imagery.
