Need Help. Pronoun 'it'

Hi teachers,

Is this question correct? Is it necessary the 'it' at the end?

Did the man find a tall tree and went up it?

Yes, he did.

Hi, First, Did the man... GO (not went). The order "go up it" is very awkward.

The order "go up it" is very awkward. Perhaps using "climb" instead of "go up" would solve that.

Did the man find a tall tree and climb it?

He found a tall tree and went up it.
