'My name is Xyz' or 'I'm Xyz?'

Question

I have always advised students to use "My name is Xyz' (where 'Xyz' is the person's name) as opposed to 'I'm Xyz' - especially in more formal situations.
Does anyone have any comments on differences between the two?

My name is Xyz is the usual way to introduce oneself.

At an informal party:

Hi, I'm Sam. (Nobody will remember the last names of all the new people they meet at a party. It's tough enough to remember first names.)

At a business convention where there are lots of booths full of sales representatives:
Hello, I'm Sam Sneed of Gargantua Manufacturing. We design and manufacture parts for robots. Here's my card. (The business card has his name, etc.)

You are a speaker at a conference.
Good morning, everyone. My name is Professor Sam Sneed. I'd like to talk to you today about....

You are a student on the first day of class. The professor asks everyone to introduce themselves.
My name is Sam Sneed. I come from Germany. ...

At a fund-raising social given by the mayor of the city for all the movers and shakers:
Hello, I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Sam Sneed. I head the mayor's campaign committee. Just call me Sam.

In letters, we see many English learners start with "I am Sam Sneed."In letters, start with "My name is Sam Sneed" not "I am."
