There's not a huge difference, but . . .



wonder - he wants to find the answer to the question

muse - relates more to a fact than to a question. eg he is thinking about something, pondering something

Hi Clive, thanks. I understand, but I wanted to know whether there were options besides wonder. Wondering why is common, as you say, so I wondered whether there were other ways of expressing it. Musing why/whether, speculating why/whether and so forth.

speculate - suggests forming possible opinions with no real evidence or solid foundation
