Is this what you would have said?
The is a slit in the iris.
What if the piece missing doesn't extend to the outer limit of the iris like in the photo but there is a circular piece missing in the iris?
How would you express both so that people could understand without a picture?
Ps Is the choice of words correct and natural? Especially the underlined bit?
