Meaning of 'available' depending on its position

Hello, Trying to help out a friend, I've been doing some proofreading of her article. I've just come across a sentence that says:

[Based on a wide range] of references available, [...]

I wonder whether the predicative position of 'available' in this particular case might affect its meaning in any way. For some reason, 'available references' sounds somewhat less natural to me here. I know this type of adjectives does show this behaviour, and I know the meaning of some of them might change quite dramatically, but available is usually excluded from this latter group, isn't it?

So, is my feeling wrong? Would available references have a different meaning?
