What is the difference among 'many', 'a great many', 'a great deal of', 'a host of', 'an array of' and 'a multitude of'? Are they used in different contexts?

Hi Christanford; "Many" and "a lot" are the most general adjectives. The others are used in particular contexts, or for extra emphasis. For example.

- "a multitude of sins" is a set phrase,
- "a host of angels" is from the Bible (meaning a group of indeterminant numbers)
- "an array of numbers" is in formal mathematics, where the ordering is significant.
