Let's say I am with three other people. Then another person joins us. I could say:
"That makes five people."
"That makes it five people."
Separately, let's say a sports team just lost another game, after previously losing four games. I could say:
"That makes five losses in a row."
"That makes it five losses in a row."
What is the prevailing thinking on "it" here? How necessary is "it"?
