She says:
Wanted me to go round and make out I’d gone to change the bandages! But, to tell you the truth, I didn’t dare show that much interest. Besides, whatever I said he’d think I’dmade up to comfort him. He ’d believe you.
His mother is a nurse, so I understand she's saying: He wanted me to go to his friend and ... (change her the bandages?) The problem is with "make out" here? However she wasn't interested in it. And she told him something so that he would think that maybe she went there and did what he wanted.
