Looking for the right epithet
I'd like to know how the sentence "Rest in peace" can be ended by adding an epithet denoting deep affection when the addressee is a man and the person who says it is also a man (and there's no romantic relationship between them). "Rest in peace, love" seems to imply that romantic view, "Rest in peace, darling" sounds right for a woman, but I'm not so sure about a man. In the specific context I have in mind "friend" wouldn't work, either, since it's more a one-way admiration relationship rather than friendship. Any idea?

If there's no relationship whatsoever between them, then you don't need to add anything to it.

Thank you for your answers. It's not that there's no relationship between both persons, or I wouldn't be asking this; only that it's not one I'd call friendship (it's more like an old beloved and respected teacher and a student of his). This is why "friend" (or "dear friend") doesn't sound too good to me.
