We have a little bathem hen,
With feathers black as coal,
That looks so wise with shining eyes,
Purched on a roosting pole.
The children crack her hickory nuts,
and down from there she comes.
She knows as well as,
I they do.
Where to find her plate of crumbs.
She sang for them purched on their knee.
And loves to hear them laugh with glee.
One day while cracking hickory nuts,
They cracked her little head..
Oh Dear! I think we've killed her,
They all in one voice said.
Such great alarm we meant no harm.
But blackie wasent dead.
She shook her head and run sideways,
and winked her little eyes.
As if to say this was to her a big,
and bad suprise.
Now they have lost their little friend.
For she will not come near.
No matter how they coax or beg,
She seems to have a fear
