In the thread "Rid of John Paul . . . finally", one of the contributors stated that John Paul attended confession daily. This prompted me to speculate on what he might be doing in the Vatican Palace, to necessitate a daily confession. Perhaps, between the ages of 14 and 34, I might have needed (had I been religiously inclined) to make a daily confession of lewd thoughts. These kept cropping up, inconveniently, every few minutes when I was 16 years old, but I had managed to reduce their occurrence to once every hour or so (on average) by the time I was 26.
At the age of 63, I have slowed down considerably and nowadays would require the services of a Father Confessor on a fortnightly basis. Except in one week, a few months ago, when I unwisely experimented with Viagra. The question arises:- Should lewd thoughts, if we refrain from translating them into practical action, be considered a sin at all? Where is the harm? Surely, it is only natural that a 16-year old, male or female, should have lewd thoughts in abundance. You would be concerned for his health if he did not have such fleeting thoughts. Is the Church, whether Roman Catholic or Protestant, just making us feel guilty about an issue where no person ought to have a feeling of guilt? Is this just a means of making people addicted to their religion, by making them dependent upon their confessor for even the most trivial of so-called "sin"? If the trivial matter of a lewd thought is a sin requiring confession, what sort of confession would I need to make if I did something really bad, such as an act of violence?
