My friend told me that lenses in China are/were a lot cheaper, so I figured/figure might/may as well get them there, since I'll be visiting in the summer.

I would probably choose a version where 'are' pairs with 'figure' or where 'were' pairs with 'figured'.
'may as well' and 'might as well' are in free variation. 'may' is a tiny bit more formal sounding to some speakers.
