Late mown grass

Hello,

I have a question concerning the following sentence:



"These last (trees) he had gathered in two elegant platoons of perhaps twenty each, standing at attention in a field of late mown grass."

What does the "late mown grass" mean here? I don't understand especially what the word "late" means here.
