Is "I've been to see..." proper English?

I've been to see the Bodies Exhibition when it was in London a year or so ago and I have to say that it is pretty amazing stuff, if a little bit freaky

What I want to add here is that the context was written by someone lived in England, most likely a native English speaker. So are you sure the expression in the context is not good English?
