Question

It seems strange to me that just this year I notice that song. I think this is starting in the third year in which the show "Monk" has played, but I only started hearing the song in the promos for this season. The lyrics are captivating, as is the song style.
And I am so glad the show is still going pretty strong. The character is a one-trick pony, but there is a lot of charm in the entire cast.

Depends on how you count. lists 13 episodes originally shown July-October 2002, 9 episodes shown June-August 2003, and 7 episodes now being shown, January-March 2004. All these dates refer to the original cable TV broadc er, showing, with broadcast TV following later. The web site says that the cable network referred to the 22nd show as the season 2 finale, but that season 2 properly includes the later group of 7 episodes.
So Pat is correct if he or she is counting calendar years or if counting seasons according to the cable TV people, but other people may say that the second season includes a planned total of 16 shows and is still going on, as would be my inclination.

It's the new theme song starting with the second season. If you're just seeing the second-season episodes for the first time now (as is the case for broadcast TV viewers in the US, I think) starting with "Mr. Monk Goes Back to School" then you won't have heard it before.

I watch it on USA cable network. Because this is the second time it is a series on its own (the first time it was a summer replacement), or because the cable networks don't do the regular season contracts, it is in its 3rd "season" on USA.
I just don't recall hearing that song before the promos for this new season, which began in January, in the lead-up and starting credits in either the first or the second season on USA. And the old kind of rinky-tink '20s guitar melody still plays at the breaks, pauses and the end of the current season's shows.

I will try to remember it.
So, two more interestingly produced commercials have attracted my attention. I love the soft-shoe dancing, the dancer and the song (probably gonna be called "Rubber Band Man") in the Office Max ad. The song starts out with the words (not the tune and meter) of an old song, "Hand me down my walking cane" (next line Not From the Old Song:"Hand me down my hat"). ( I think of the rubber band/elastics thread we had here last week.)
For the second, I don't recall the product or even if there are words. Shows how effective the ad is, though. . . promoting washers and dryers, unisex clothing, some sody pop or other. Anyway a young black man with dreadlocks is tap-dancing through a laundromat, escaping death and accidents until he flings himself onto a chair, and morphs into a lovely white woman sucking on a can of something. Maybe you know the ad? Now I think of it I can't recall the tune, even.
