Could you please tell me if these sentences are OK? Any suggestions are welcome.

(Context: A fairy tale)

  1. It was an anomaly. The farther they walked away, the louder their footsteps got/became.
  2. It was an anomaly. The closer they walked in, the more the sound of their footsteps faded.
