Is this sentence's grammar correct?

"The weather having been bad, we started for home."

The expanded version of this sentence is:
Because the weather had been bad, we started for home.

Please let me know if the top sentence is correct and be kind enough to give me a few more examples. Thanks alot.

I saw the sentence as an example in a Taiwanese textbook. The sentence "The weather having been bad, we started for home" still seems awkward to me.
