Is this a grammatically correct sentence?

''they're so much more human-friendly when they're ducklings, then they grow up'' I'm not sure if the word ''when'' should be added to the second sentence ''then when they grow up''

Wow! It sure does. I was off to the races in the wrong direction myself until I found out "then" was supposed to be "than".
