" Ms " actually is the title before a woman's surname when it is not specified whether she is married or not. It was coined as a feminist response to the ambiguous " Mr ". Originally, both " Miss " and " Mrs " derive from " mistress ", but you know which is which now.

Ms is a courtesy title for a woman or girl.

Because Ms is not an abbreviation, it is usually written without the ending period.
