Is or are?
Tell me which of the patients in the waiting room is/are to be seen next.
Which is correct, is or are? I think is should probably be used, but would are have been acceptable in some time long gone?

Someone please correct immediately if I'm wrong, but I believe that "is" and "are" are both correct here; "is" would be used if you're talking about just one patient being seen next, and "are" would be used if you're talking about more than one patient being seen next.
