is "learn beyond curriculum" correct?

Hi,

My question is how to express that a person finished, for example, 8th grade physics curriculum and while was still studying in 8th-grade started learning stuff that is meant for 9th graders.

I though of :

He was learning beyond physics curriculum.

Is that correct and what other suggestion do you have?
