"more so" is comparative. That means it must apply to something that can exist in various degrees.

For example, consider the sentence I have trouble with English verbs. You can have more trouble with them today than you usually have:

I have never had more trouble with English verbs than I am having today.
I have trouble with English verbs, but never more so than today.

If you start with I've got a gold medal, you don't have anything that can be compared in various degrees. You can't say I've got more gold medal today.
