Could anyone tell me is (is/ are + past participle or Past tense?), and how to use this tense? Thks

1.So the student knows what particular activities are involved.
2. They are referred to as part of a generalized activity--my homework can be something different every day.

What you are asking about is the grammar feature called 'passive voice'. Consider these examples.

Mary cooked dinner. Active voice.
Dinner was cooked (by Mary). Passive voice.

In 'active', the focus is on 'Mary'. In passive, the focus is on 'dinner' and we may not even care about who cooked it.
'Passive' is formed by the verb 'be' + past participle.
