What is the difference between "invesitgate" and "research"?THanks!

INVESTIGATE means to look closely into a particular event, problem or observation. For example when a crime is committed, the Police will INVESTIGATE it, by examining the scene for evidence, interviewing witnesses, and so on. So it is an investigation into the actual circumstances of an event.

RESEARCH means to search for background information on a particular subject from other people who have looked into that subject before. For example, you might start researching a subject by looking on Wikipedia and googling the appropriate keywords to see if there is any other information available on that subject.

So the difference is that INVESTIGATE relates to the actual case at hand, and must be done by the people involved with the case, whereas RESEARCH relates to a specific topic and involves learning from other people who have worked on that subject independently.
