It seems that "into" could be replaced by "in" or "to":
A. "He put the pencil INTO the box."
B. "He put the pencil IN the box."
Because of equivalence of A and B, could C be replaced by D or E?
C. "He split the cake INTO several pieces."
D. "He split the cake TO several pieces."
E. "He split the cake IN several pieces."
