Instead or therefore ?
In the next paragraph, the question was given to select an answer between 'instead' and 'therefore.'
As a member of the Teen Council, I had to speak to the Community Council to support building an ice skating rink in our community and the audience was made up of many parents and some young people, most of whom I knew. I did not focus on my friends' concerns for fun. (a) , I talked to the people who would make the decision-the parents. To address their concerns about safety I discussed the security that comes from knowing where a child is, the presence of a professional rink staff, and the careful selection of rules for using the rink safely.
The answer is 'instead.' That's Okay with me, but I can't explain why 'therefore' can't be an answer?
In my mind,
1. I did not want to focus on my friends' concerns for fun. (a) instead, I talked to the people who would make the decision-the parents.
That logic is okay with me.
but,
2. 1. I did not want to focus on my friends' concerns for fun. (a) therefore, I talked to the people who would make the decision-the parents.
I don't know why "therfore" can not be the answer.
Can you give tell my why?

Notice that you added the phrase 'want to' to your #1 and #2, but it is not in the original-- and I think that makes a big difference. 'Therefore' suggests cause-and-effect, which is not expressed in the original. The original just states one fact 'I didn't do X'.
