Yes. You can use any of the following:

He injured his knee while he was playing hockey.
He injured his knee while playing hockey.
He injured his knee playing hockey.

All verbs have an -ing form, if that's what you're asking.

injure > injuring
update > updating
look > looking
find > finding
...
and so on.

They can be used the same way that playing is used above.

What I'd like to know is probably not related to injure + another verb+ ing because another verb is from another clause (while you are...)

Here is a verb spend

It has object + a verb-ing form (ex : I spent $100 dollars buying a brand new phone]

The construction you describe is quite common. Here are some more examples:

He kissed his wife knowing he might never see her again.
You'll ruin your knee playing rugby.
He sang the national anthem standing on his head.
Don't waste your life watching television.
I will make my fortune writing for the screen.

In each example above - as well as in the examples you gave - the 'ing word', or gerund, is the object of an implied preposition. It is not always idiomatic to include this preposition, but one can always grammatically do so, e.g.:

He kissed his wife while knowing he might never see her again.
You'll ruin your knee by playing rugby.
He sang the national anthem while standing on his head.
Don't waste your life by watching television.
I will make my fortune by writing for the screen.

There are many circumstances in which you must include a preposition before the gerund in order to avoid ambiguity. You should not, for instance, write, 'Frank shot the dog waiting by the door.' if Frank, the subject of the sentence, is the one doing the waiting. You should write, 'Frank shot the dog while waiting by the door.'

In summary, in a sentence of the form

subject + verb + object + preposition + gerund phrase

the preposition can often be left out. Sometimes it is idiomatic to do so; sometimes it is not idiomatic to do so. Both usages are often acceptable. However, if there's a chance of confusion, you should leave the preposition in.
