I think "psychiatric hospital" and "mental hosptial" are both the formal name for a hospital specialized the treatment of the mental ill. I wonder whether "insane institue" has been formerly like this. Is it a vulgar name actually?

I don't think the term 'Mental Hospital' is used in Canada..

I wonder whether "insane institute" has been formerly like this. No. But the term Insane Asylum used to be used.
Today it is seen as an offensive, insensitive and very unkind name.
