I did cry v. I cried

Today I tired to explain to my student why my 6yo son had said "I did cry, Mummy." instead of "I cried, Mummy." when recounting his day at summer camp. I failed to explain why miserably!

It is bad grammar, of course, but young children experiment with language: that is how they learn. There is no further explanation.
