How to use "had"

Is there any grammar error of the sentence “ In May 2008 he had been arrested while he carried counterfeit notes with him through the U.S. Customs”

S. Customs” I wouldn't say the sentence is incorrect. But I'd omit 'with him', since 'carry' implies that.

I wouldn't say the sentence is incorrect.

But I'd omit 'with him', since 'carry' implies that.

And I'd prefer 'while he was carrying'.
