how to use "and" and "or"
I am always confused about how to decide which to use. Could you help me with the following sentence?
Some people used to say that taking a certain medicine would increase the level of intelligence and/or that a certain food would impove the working of brain function.
Could you kindly tell me what difference it makes?

My impression is that "or" has a nuance that people may have said other things too in similar vein, whereas "and" feels more "exact" and "complete". "the working of brain function" doesn't seem quite right to me.
