How long of a drive will it be?

Are the following sentences correct?

1) How long of a drive will it be?

2) How much of a problem will that cause the government?

To me, "how long of a ~" is glaringly incorrect. It should be "how long a ~". However, the "of" is inserted by some AmE speakers in cases such as this, and I believe it may be more accepted over there, at least in informal spoken language.
