Since my work revolves around electronics and PCB’s, I think I can add a couple of comments that may be helpful when we have to hook up a new toy at home. Modular connector is an abstract name given to a devise that allows electronic signal to pass from point A to point B. In reference to phone and data equipment, connectors have an a standard in the , not sure if it’s universal and they are given a “RJ” designation. RJ stands for “registered jack” which comes in male and female. Each RJ has a set of number which by design designates the functionality and configuration of the equipment. A “jack” is a male connector.

Connector has many shapes and forms, but it is a generic name given to a devise which allows electronic or electrical to get from point A to point B.

Note: electronic carries a DC component and electrical carries Alternating Current, which is 115 volt coming from the wall socket.

Sometimes, these connection points are called “ports”. Usually when there are multiple ports, as in the back of the PC or HiFi amplifier, it’s called a panel.

When we buy a new PC, the printer cable does not come with it which usually find out after we brought it home. For the folks that are not familiar, they may have a hard time if they don’t know what to ask for. The “printer cable”, as it’s called, actually has connectors fabricated onto the cable at the factory which allows the printer to be connected to the printer port at the back of the PC for communication.
